What does highway patrol officer do

If a motorist fights a moving violation ticket or an investigation proceeds to trial, a highway patrol officer may be compelled to testify in court. To succeed as a highway patrol officer requires the ability to make sound judgments under pressure on a regular basis. Maintaining composure in the face of crime and crisis is also an important attribute.

Integrity and compassion are desirable traits for a person who chooses this career. A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary to be considered as a candidate for highway patrol training school.

The training is provided by local or regional agencies and normally lasts several months. Patrol office responsibilities are unique each day. Highway patrolmen spend much of their time enforcing laws on public highways, assisting motorists in need of help, and working with other emergency officials to help manage and eventually clear accident scenes. They also assist local police forces in apprehending criminals or assisting in emergency situations.

Highway patrol officers often come into contact with dangerous situations. They are trained to know how to spot potential danger and how to properly handle dangerous situations. The duties of the highway patrol go beyond just handling accidents and assisting local law enforcement.

They also help with areas that do not pertain to the roadways. Many highway patrolmen work in court houses helping with the processing and transfer of prisoners.

You will attend the week CHP Academy and get paid during training, learning the skills needed to save lives and provide protection in a variety of scenarios.

There is a very strong esprit de corps at the CHP. Both when going through training at the Academy and when working with others in sometimes high stressful and difficult situations. You will develop a great sense of camaraderie with your fellow members of the Highway Patrol. The sense of family is strong at the CHP. Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage is provided for CHP Officers and their families, with an annual leave program that accumulates with years of service in the Department.
